Maribel also said that she favors pairing distilled white vinegar with microfiber cloths for surface cleaning.

“Combined with water and dish liquid soap, white vinegar is your go-to multipurpose cleaner for stains and general cleaning,” she says.

Annabel Bullet, Head Housekeeper in Mayfair, is also a big fan of microfiber cloths.

“They eliminate up to 99 percent of bacteria with only water and are about three times more effective than traditional cleaning cloths,” she says. “This is obviously why many hospitals have converted to microfiber cloths, towels and mops.”

Monica, head recruitment consultant at Bespoke Bureau, also lists microfiber cloths as a must-have. Also, she adds that a glass cleaner, a mildly abrasive cleaner, an all-purpose cleaner and a pair of latex gloves are the products that you should have in your cleaning caddy.

“Clean as you go,” says Lena Johnsson, a long standing expert housekeeping registered with the agency.

She recommends cleaning the kitchen daily to keep things from getting out of control. Obviously, making quick work of the daily pile up of clutter and mess will also help you avoid cross-contamination of germs.

“Keep a microfiber cloth handy,” Johnsson says, “so you can immediately treat spills. That way they don’t harden and become ten times more difficult to clean later.”

The key to making kitchen-cleaning easier is remarkably simple: “Don’t procrastinate,” Sarah says.

Needless to say, microfiber cloth is perfect for quickly cleaning up small messes on kitchen counters and appliance surfaces. However, both Sarah and Lena recommend using baking soda for bigger food-related messes.

“Interestingly, use the baking soda in your pantry for grease build up,” she says.

Sprinkle some baking soda on a cloth and wipe down any areas that have grease build up. Give it a couple of minutes and then follow up by wiping the area with a clean, damp cloth to pick up the residue.

Much like the kitchen, keeping up with your bathroom on a daily basis can make deeper, less frequent cleanings much easier.

“Tackle a small chore before it becomes a big one,” says Johnsson. “I’m talking the toilet, the shower and tub and the floors. Especially behind the toilet. It’s one of the most germ-ridden areas, so you really should be cleaning it once or twice per week.”

Not convinced that you should be wiping down that toilet more frequently? Johnsson explains, “Just think, every time you flush, the toilet water and waste mix together, sending plumes of microbes into the air and, in-turn, all over the toilet.” Ick!

Developing consistent and simple cleaning habits in your bathroom will mean avoiding tackling a much larger mess later on. Squeegee your shower after each use to make regular weekly cleanings easier and wipe down the toilet and toothbrush holders twice a week.

7. Pay attention to smaller, often-forgotten areas in your bathroom

Johnsson stresses remembering often-forgotten areas in the bathroom in order to really keep things thoroughly clean. These commonly forgotten areas can include faucet aerators and the toothbrush holder. In fact, the toothbrush holder is the third germiest place in your entire home, so you will want to make sure it’s cleaned often. Sarah also points out the importance of cleaning these areas and says using an old toothbrush with some warm water is the best way to get those nooks and crannies clean, including around your faucet.

8. Stay on top of dust by focusing on hidden areas in your living room

The living room is the place where you, your family and any guests will spend most of your time, so you really want to do a thorough job in there. Johnson says the best way to ensure you’re hitting every spot is to move your furniture as you go. Shift everything around so you’re vacuuming and dusting the floor underneath where the furniture sits before moving it back.

“This will ensure you’re getting those hard-to-reach places that have been collecting dust all year,” Johnsson says. “And don’t forget to vacuum underneath the cushions!”

To stay ahead of the curve in your living room, you’ll want to vacuum under furniture and between cushions at least once a month. If you or a family member have allergies, do those tasks every other week.

9. Use the right tools to deal with dust

Feather dusters might look adorable, but they’re not terribly practical. In order to remove dust effectively in the living room, Lena suggests using a microfiber duster or cloth instead of a feather duster.

“Feather dusters tend to just move dust around and not remove it at all,” Boone says.

10. Clean dust-collecting textiles regularly

Maribel agrees that, unlike the kitchen and bathroom, the main challenge in any living room is the dust-collecting textiles.

“Regular cleaning of upholstery, carpets and linens will help reduce and control dust mite populations,” explains Sarah.

While you may not feel like cleaning those curtains or vacuuming all of your soft furniture, it’s important when it comes to keeping your home clean and your family healthy.

Curtains should be washed at least twice a year, but you can give them a light vacuuming with an attachment once a month. Regular vacuuming and dusting can be done once a week.

We all want our bedrooms to feel like an oasis, but we don’t necessarily want to spend hours deep-cleaning them. Checking off these easy tasks will get your bedroom in shape quickly.

11. Focus on laundering linens and pillows

Much like in the living room, keeping linens clean will be the most important task in your bedrooms. You’ll want to wipe down things like baseboards, ceiling fans and other surfaces, but Johnsson points out that you and your family members spend an awful lot of time sleeping on your sheets, so keeping them clean is job number one.

“Washing your sheets weekly is more important than the rest,” she says. “It’s the best way to keep germs and allergens away — especially considering all of the hours you spend sleeping in bed throughout the week.”

Maribel agrees and adds that washing your pillows in the washing machine keeps them clean and will also fluff them back up nicely after a few months of being slept on.

“Be sure to use the fastest spin cycle so that as much water is wrung out as possible before putting the pillow in the dryer,” Maribel says.

Even with protectors, you’ll want to wash your pillows at least twice a year.

Sarah has a simple but effective tip for keeping your bedroom clutter-free and serene.

“Make your bed as soon as you get up,” she says. “It may not seem like it would make a big difference, but this is the center of your room. Having your bed made can make the whole room look tidier instantaneously. Getting in the habit of making your bed every day makes the cleaning process become ingrained in your daily routine.”

To keep your bedroom feeling like a peaceful retreat, tidy up the surfaces after making your bed in the morning. Put any clothing that has been left out into the hamper or back in your drawers. Valuable tips to find and maintain the highest caliber employee(s) possible to staff your home:

  1. Needless to say, micro-management by an employer is the number one reason household staff members quit their positions. Of course, this is closely followed by excessive over-time work hours (on a continual basis). Essentially, you must be satisfied with the work of your employees. However, there is sometimes a fine line between checking on them and chiding them. Also, remember that your employee(s) have chosen to enter the service profession and they do want to deliver for you. 
  2. If you are providing quarters (and it is customary to do so in this profession), ensure that they are clean and in good repair. Sort these aspects out prior to your new employee(s) arrival and move-in. Importantly, if you are employing a couple, they are unlikely to remain happy long-term in  inadequate accommodations, such as a small bedroom. While we obviously screen our domestic couples for a high-level of compatibility and the ability to work well, any couple needs space and privacy to work at their best.

  3. Clarify. Issue written instructions and/or spend the time with your new employee(s) and communicate your specific needs and preferences. For example, you should describe your culinary likes and dislikes, wardrobe care, preferred order of tasks an so on. Importantly, you should do this and show them your routines prior to their assumption of duties. Needless to say, its worth putting in the time in the beginning of the employment. As a result, you will be much happier. Also, be very clear about your strongest likes or dislikes. Another tip: If your home or estate does not have a manual of operation and procedures, consider allowing your new employee(s) or us as an agency to create you one. Needless to say, such a guide can be an invaluable tool in the care of your residence. It should include information regarding your personal needs and preferences as well as those of other family members and regular guests. It should also outline routine care and functional operation of each and every component of your residence and grounds.
  4. While domestic professionals pride themselves on their adaptability and flexibility, it is still important to notify your staff of changes in schedules. Moreover, you should do this as soon as possible. This will help insure that any changes can be incorporated smoothly while maintaining a high-level of comfort for you family.

  5. Importantly, please insure that the proper equipment is in place for your employee to efficiently do the work you require. Items such as a top-of-the-line vacuum cleaner can make a big difference in both results and time effectiveness. Also, some tasks, such as cleaning  oversized windows are better hired out to a vendor to do the job correctly and safely.
  6. It can be very tempting to load on the hours during busy periods without giving additional pay and very easy to forget to provide compensatory time-off later, when things slow down. In a word: Don’t. Anything over 48 hours per week should be acknowledged and compensated. This should be with either a bonus or extra time off.  Salary should always reflect compensation for a 40 plus hour week to be in compliance with the law. End of the year bonuses, insurance coverage, benefits such as cars etc can really encourage a lasting employer/employee relationship. Yearly paid vacations should allow for 4 weeks of rest.
  7. Maintain a productive working relationship with your domestic employees through regularly scheduled staff meetings. You may think you are communicating sufficiently by providing them with regular instructions and feedback. However, they also need a time to share their concerns and suggestions with YOU. Therefore, it is important you schedule times to listen to them.

  8. Remember that domestic service is a REAL CAREER and it must be respected as such. Paying staff members ‘Under the table,’ is a thing of the past. Obviously, you must provide full benefits and incentives is as important in this profession as it is to any other. Importantly, household employees are directly involved in helping you maintain a comfortable and gracious estate lifestyle. If personal loyalty, a willingness to go the ‘extra mile’  are qualities you seek in your domestic staff, providing a competitive benefit package is a good idea. 
  9. Remember too that no one is exempt from the occasional bad day. A good working relationship between household staff and employer, like any professional relationship, requires occasional sensitivity and tact on everyone’s part. Counting to ten, walking away or simply cutting an employee a bit of slack when they are having a difficult time, can do much toward maintaining a harmonious, productive and long-term employer/staff relationship.
  10. Occasionally, ask yourself if the work load, and the amount of time allowed to complete expected duties continue to be realistic, or have changes in your residence, family or lifestyle pushed the limits of your current staffing level?
